Location
The Valle d’Itria welcomes its visitors into an expanse of ancient olive trees, surrounded by a redolent red earth which renders the surrounding landscape a succession of unique colour effects with, in the background, the skyline punctuated by the cupolas and pinnacles of the famous trulli. Also known as the Valle dei Trulli (Valley of the Trulli), it stretches between the provinces of Bari, Brindisi and Taranto and includes the towns of Alberobello, Castellana Grotte, Ostuni, Locorotondo, Ceglie, Cisternino, Fasano, Martina Franca, Noci and Putignano. In the heart of the Valle d’Itria, not to be missed is Alberobello with its trulli, Unesco World Heritage site; along all the valley are scattered villages with these typical constructions, like Cisternino and Locorotondo. Nearby are the famous Grotte di Castellana which have often been the ideal setting for performances of Dante’s Inferno.
