Location
Located in Portoferraio, the main town of Elba, the largest island in the Tuscan Archipelago and the third largest in Italy. Legend has it that the Tuscan Archipelago originated from a jewel that slipped from the neck of Venus, goddess of beauty and love, and fell into the waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Elba owes its name to the Greeks, who called it Aithalia, a term meaning soot in Greek, in reference to the working of iron extracted from the mines of Elba. Many excursions can be made to the mineral deposits of Calamita, Ginevro and to a small worksite called Sassi Neri. The island is also known for the brief reign of Napoleon, who left significant mementos in the Palazzina dei Mulini, in the villa of San Martino and in the churches of Portoferraio, Marciana and other locations. Elba is one of the wildest and most picturesque areas. Despite its small size – an area of 224 sq km – it offers a wide and varied range: from the seabed, a paradise for diving enthusiasts, to the mountains surrounded by centuries-old woods, from the beaches and coves framed by Mediterranean scrub to small hillside villages. The beaches of Elba stand out for their exceptional variety, catering to every taste and desire: from long stretches of sand to white pebbles and small coves. There are beaches of white granite sand and smooth rocks in the western part, such as Marina di Campo, Cavoli and Fetovaia; beaches of golden sand in the central part, both to the south and north-west, such as Biodola, Lacona and Lido di Capoliveri; beaches of white shingle on the west coast of Portoferraio, such as Ghiaie, Padulella and Capo Bianco. The island boasts an excellent network of connections, thanks to the numerous ferry and hydrofoil routes between Piombino and Portoferraio (the main town of the island located to the north), and Rio Marina and Cavo, located on the east coast. The crossing takes about an hour, from the early morning hours until 8.30 pm in winter and until 11 pm in summer. In the summer months, the airport of Marina di Campo, located in La Pila, has daily connections to the main Tuscan cities such as Pisa, the Pisa-San Giusto airport, and Florence, the Firenze-Peretola airport.
